Ellu thogayal - Sesame seeds chutney

I love the flavour of sesame in any form be it sambhar, idly podi or Sesame rice. This thogayal is very easy to make and makes an excellent pair with Ulutham pongal and lemon rice. After a long tiring trip I wanted to start blogging with a simple post and this thogayal helped it too :). Sharing my simple recipe and hope it helps !!

Ellu thogayal

Cuisine: Indian
Category: Side dish
Difficulty level: Easy
Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook time: 5 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

Black Seasame seeds/ellu
4 Tsp
Urad dal
3 Tsp
Red chillies
6-8
Compound asafetida(optional)
A small piece
Curry leaves (optional)
4-5 leaves
Garlic flakes(optional)
3-5
Tamarind
1/2 inch piece
Salt
1/2 tsp flat
Oil
1 Tsp

Preparation

     1.     Soak tamarind in little hot water and assemble remaining ingredients.

Method

     1.     In pan add oil and saute urad dal along with hing, garlic flakes, red chilies and curry leaves for few minutes till nice aroma comes. Transfer the contents to another plate and add sesame seeds to the hot pan. Dry roast for just a minute and when they splutter well switch off the flame.

    2.     Cool down sesame seeds separately. First grind the dal , chilies, garlic flakes along with soaked tamarind for few minutes. Finally add sesame seeds along with salt and little water to grind a thick paste.

     3.     Serve with urad dal rice or lemon rice!!

Notes

     ·         If you don't like garlic flavour use few spoons of grated coconut instead. Similarly you can skip curry leaves if they are not available.
     ·         Adjust number of garlic according to their size. Similarly adjust chili as per your spice level.
     ·         Roasting sesame seeds in hot pan ensures they are roasted fast and evenly. Hence I do this way.

Tastes divine with ulutham pongal especially on rainy days !!!
