This is unofficially my first post (Can guess it from quality of the pics π). Puttu is an authentic kerala breakfast dish which is very healthy. I tasted it with green gram (cherupayar) when i visited kerala and instantly liked it. The sweet puttu I got to taste in a small road side shop near our home in mambalam and loved it tooπ !! Unfortunately my hubby is not a big fan of both the versions. Also since I did not have that puttu maker I kept procrastinating this recipe for years !! Later I found it can be steamed in idly mould too . Got excited and tried immediately. It was much simpler than i anticipated and turned out good too! This is very filling recipe and kids will love to have the sweet puttu as evening snack.

Method
Sweet Puttu:
1. Assemble
all ingredients required.
2.
Mix 1/3 cup water to 1 cup flour and check for puttu consistency
and sprinkle water if necessary. (If we hold the flour it should stay in
shape and if we press it should brake.)
3.
Grease the idly plate with little ghee and place the flour
tightly.
4.
Steam for 8-10 mins. The colour of batter won't change much but
we will get nice aroma once the puttu is done.
5. Crumble the cooked puttu mix remaining ghee,1/4
cup coconut along with sugar, cardomom powder and jaggery. Enjoy the sweet
puttu!

Salt Version:
1.
Add salt to remaining 1 cup flour. Mix water till you get puttu
consistency as mentioned above.
2.
Grease the idly mould and add 1 spoon grated coconut. Top it
with puttu flour and steam for 8-10 mins.
3.
Serve with boiled green gram and banana. Tastes good with kadala
curry too !!
Notes
·
Rice flour can take more water depending on
each brand. If water is not enough puttu won't get cooked properly so add
water patiently.
·
Tastes best when served hot. I just boiled
green gram, added salt and sundal powder with little oil.
