Stuffed Idlies Recipe

Idlies are all time favorite in our home. However when I came across the recipes of stuffed idlies, I got so tempted to try it since I found them so cute and appetizing. There are many variations in what stuffing we want to use but since this is my first try I decided to safe play with potato stuffing 😉. [In worst case I can use the stuffing for pooris or make masala dosa 😀 ]. The recipe was more simple than i expected and turned out delicious. Since most kids love potatoes, this is an easy way to make them eat idlies I guess !! Do share your feedback in comments as it will help lot for my improvement. Let me share the recipe ☺.

 1.      Pressure cook potatoes for 4-5 whistles. In the mean time, Chop all vegetables finely including curry leaves and assemble all ingredients. Once the potatoes are done peel their skin and mash very nicely.

Method

     1.  In kadai add 2 spoons of oil and once it becomes hot enough add mustard and jeera. Once they starts spluttering add hing, green chillies, ginger and curry leaves.

    2.  Add chopped onions, turmeric and a pinch of salt and sauté in medium. Once onion becomes translucent add mashed potatoes, salt, chilli powder and mix everything well.

     3.   If needed add few spoons of water to get a homogeneous mix. finally add 2 spoons oil and curry leaves. Cool down the stuffing and make small patties out of it.

  4.  Grease the idly pan with gingelly oil and add 1 tablespoon batter. place the patties in the batter. Cover with another tablespoon of batter.

     5. Steam the idlies for 7-8 minutes and once they are done serve hot with any chutney/sambhar/idli podi of your choice. Tastes yummy as such too :)

Notes

  •  Potatoes should be cooked very soft and mashed well.
  • Do chop all veggies as fine as possible. Big chunks will hinder while         forming patties.
  • Add less batter in idly plate. I added using the ladle I use for making mini idlies.
